Second Cousins Once Removed
Short Fiction, Super 16mm / HDCam, 10:30, 2010
PRESS
"As if Monte Hellman or Cassavettes made a ten-minute short, this film follows two girls through the boredom of an average night, which includes not only all the magic of childhood, but also the myths of American life." -- Rüdiger Suchsland, Artechock
"An elegant use of people and location, along with an assured grasp of the medium. A little gem, and a directorial talent I'll be watching." --Monte Hellman (Director of Two-Lane Blacktop)

TAGLINE
Two young cousins sneak out at night and have a startling encounter with the adult world.
SYNOPSIS
On a road trip, distant cousins Naomi and Jo-Jo are left alone in a motel room. Without permission, the girls venture out into the night in search of soda, playing cards, and mischief.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
In “Second Cousins Once Removed”, I set out to create a subtle portrait of an adolescent girl with one foot caught in childhood and one foot in the adult world. It captures the moment when an adolescent girl discovers her vulnerability to men. The film also explores the heightened tension of being in an unfamiliar environment where everything seems enticing and predatory at the same time. In the filming, I worked with character-motivated camera work, available light, and non-actors to create realistic textures.
